The weightlifting team from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) emerged victorious at the inter-university games, setting several new game records in the process.
The team was headed by Thineth Jayasuriya who participated in the 109Kg weight category. He lifted 80kg in the snatch movement and 120kg in the clean and jerk movement, achieving a total of 200kg and setting a new record. In the 61Kg weight class, A G H M K Ekanayake won the gold medal with a new record of 177Kg total weight. He lifted 77kg in the snatch method and 100kg in the clean and jerk weight. V Abhinajan, who was competing in the 67 kilogram weight category, secured a gold medal and set a new record by lifting a total of 205 kilograms. He successfully lifted 90 kilograms in the snatch movement and 115 kilograms in the clean and jerk movement. He successfully lifted 85kg in the snatch method and 117kg in the clean and jerk method.
Thineth Jayasuriya, P Miroshan and A G H M K Ekanayake are students in the Faculty of Applied Sciences. V Abhinajan is studying in the Faculty of Engineering, and D P B V R Kumarasiry is enrolled in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.
In the 55 kg weight class, J. P. Block and U. C. V. Jayawickrama placed third and fourth respectively. J. P. Block lifted 70 kg in the snatch method and 86 kg in the clean and jerk method, while U. C. V. Jayawickrama lifted 60 kg in the snatch method and 78 kg in the clean and jerk method. M. Y. M. Yazid, who competed in the 61 kg weight class, lifted 63 kg in the snatch method and 80 kg in the clean and jerk method, earning fourth place. T. Kirishan, who represented the 109 kg weight class, lifted 70 kg in the snatch method and 82 kg in the clean and jerk method, earning second place.
