It is not every day that we are given the opportunity to meet with legends of our time, it is not always that through them you see a soul yet so humble and so knowledgeable. Pandit Amaradewa was indeed a treasure within the Sri Lankan music industry who was a delight to listen to. His experiences and journey in achieving such greatness will be spoken of by generations to come.
Even though his musical abilities were appreciated and recognized worldwide, he always made time to nourish the generations of musicians yet to blossom in his own soil. We at Jayewardenepura stand tall as one such unit enriched by his wisdom and presence. Sir. Pandit Amaradewa has joined with us during many occasions and to name one of the most recent would be “Gee Magala” held in 2014, to which he participated at the invitation of Prof. Suni Ariyaratne. During all such visits, he made it clear that his purpose was to go beyond the monetary and the materialistic. Therefore as a result, he encouraged our talents and skills while motivating us to move further and higher.
Sir. Pandit Amaradewa, you will be greatly missed! The inspiration you left behind cannot be measured nor expressed in words, the path you cleared for us will be a light unto our feet. May you attain supreme bliss of nibbana!
