The opening of the gold plated fence which was a unique and special event of the University’s history was held on 2nd December 2016. Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana,Chancellor of the University, deputy incumbent of Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya, Anu Nayaka Maha Thero (Deputy Prelate) of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Maha Sanga Sabha and Vice chancellor of the University Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, graced the event.
The Bodhi tree is a significant symbol of Buddism since it is under the shelter of one such tree that Buddha gained enlightenment. This symbolic remembrance of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment refers to the Path and Fruition of Knowledge, Omniscient Knowledge and Nibbana.
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura which once hailed as a landmark of Pirivena Education is an institute of higher education which follows the footsteps of the Sinhala-Buddhist Educational tradition and it nurtures over 10,000 students at present. The university therefore has taken initiative in building a gold plated fence around the bodhiya which is placed at the heart of the university signifying and highlighting the values encouraged at the university while going back to the roots in order to understand and acknowledge the foundation on which this university was built.
