Three members from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura have achieved remarkable feats in different sports disciplines in April, bringing pride and glory to their alma mater. Chameera Ginige, Amasha de Silva and Tarushi Himahansika have excelled in table tennis, athletics and carrom respectively, proving their talents and skills on both national and international platforms.
Chameera Ginige, Instructor in Physical Education, clinched his second national table tennis title at the 76th National Table Tennis Championship held at St. Thomas College gymnasium, Mt Lavinia. He defeated Prasad Silva from the MG International in the final match, displaying his prowess and consistency in the sport. He had previously won the national title in 2018 and has been representing Sri Lanka in various international tournaments.
Amasha de Silva, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, won a silver medal in the 100 meters event at the 20th Annual Falcon Championships held in Trinidad on April 1st and 2nd. She competed with some of the best sprinters in the region and clocked a time of 11.84 seconds, securing her place on the podium. She is also the reigning national champion in the 100 meters and 200 meters events and has represented Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games and Asian Games.
Tarushi Himahansika, a second-year student of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, became the runner-up in the women’s singles category at the Grand Slam Carrom Tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Carrom Federation. The tournament was held on April 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th at the Colombo Carrom Conference premises and featured 16 female players and 32 male players from across the country. Tarushi showed her skills and strategy in the game and advanced to the final match, where she lost to Maduka Dilshani. With this achievement, she moved up to the second place in the country’s carrom rankings.
