Timber Process Innovation Center (TPIC) at the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organized a seminar on “Trends in Treatment of Wood and Wood-Based Products for the Construction Industry of Sri Lanka” in collaboration with the Chamber of Construction Industry of Sri Lanka (CCI).
The seminar allowed construction industry professionals, architects, and university and technical college students to gather information on using underutilized pine and other timber resources in the country. Resource persons discussed timber treatment, thermal modification, and seasoning methods to improve the quality of timber and the use of engineered wood products such as glulam and cross-laminated wood.
It was held on Tuesday, January 10th, 2023 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo 07.
Prof Hiran Amarasekera discussed “Current Use of Construction Timber and Future Trends and Technologies”, while the Chief Guest Dr. Dr K M A Bandara (Conservator General of Forests) explained “Supply of Timber from state forests”.
The other topics discussed at the seminar included a welcome speech by Eng. Nissanka N Wijeratne, Secretary General/CEO of the Chamber of Construction Industry of Sri Lanka, and presentations on topics such as “Supply trends and Grading of Timber in Sri Lanka with special reference to Pine timber” by Dr. C. K. Muthumala (State Timber Corporation), “Converting Pine as Dimensionally stable durable construction timber” by Mr. Jude Katukurunda (Furnicraft), , “Converting Pine and other non-durable timber to durable timber by seasoning and preservation” by Mr. Punitha Satharasinghe (A Wood Lanka), “Services offered by TPIC for the Timber Industry” by Prof. Priyan Perera, and “Joinery and furniture industry based on locally available timber” by Mr. Channa Wijesekera (Leema Creations).
