In line with Australian-Government funded scoping study for mariculture Development in Sri Lanka, Prof. Joy Becker, Associate Professor in Aquatic Animal Health and Production, the University of Sydney, Australia, and Dr. Wayne O’Connor, Senior Principal Research Scientist, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Australia visited the University on the 2nd of October 2023. Prof. Becker and Dr. Wayne O’Connor met with the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage which led to a productive discussion and added a lot of insights to the future road maps of mariculture development of Sri Lanka. The Dean of the Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, the Head of the Department of Aquatic Bioresources, Dr. Erandi Pathirana, and members of the Department of Aquatic Bioresources were also present at this event.
Marking the successful completion of a scoping study on mariculture development of Sri Lanka which further endorsed the greater potential of mariculture in Sri Lanka, the project will next focus on the commercial farming of Asian sea bass, Indian oyster, and seaweeds in Sri Lanka.
