The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is part of an international consortium under an Erasmus + project with the aim of contributing to waste management education in Sri Lanka. The Techno-Economic-Societal Sustainable Development Training in Sri Lanka (TESS) is co-financed by the European Union under the Erasmus + Capacity Building in Higher Education program.
The project is coordinated by the University of South-Eastern Norway together with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and four more Sri Lankan universities and three European universities and a non-profit organization and aims to develop new interdisciplinary programs and redesign the existing programs in the area of waste management. With this objective, different activities will be carried out: creation and reformulation of courses, training workshops for teachers, digital learning, increased recruitment of female students, cooperation with industry, inclusion of local municipalities as associated partners and intensive dissemination and exploitation activities. These activities aim to strengthen the capacities of higher education institutions in waste management, providing advisory services to municipalities and companies, improving the international profile of institutions and developing high quality teaching and research.
The project team is made up of specialists in the area of Management and Engineering in order to achieve a more comprehensive approach to the issue of waste management. Prof Kennedy Gunawardana, Dr. Dayananda Ambalangodage, Dr Anil Fernando, Dr Kingsly Karunarathne and Mr Ranil Peiris from Faculty of Management and Commerce involve this project.
