Prof. N.G.S. Shantha Gamage, attached to the Department of Physics, has been elected as the President of Institute of Physics, Sri Lanka (IPSL) at the 41st Annual General Meeting held on March 20, 2021 at the Auditorium, Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, Colombo 07. Institute of Physics Sri Lanka is the apex body of physicists in Sri Lanka and it has been incorporated by an Act of Parliament. Before becoming the president, he served as vice president, secretary of IPSL and Center Coordinator of University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Physics Olympiad, Astronomy Olympiad and Junior Science Olympiad competitions conducted by IPSL. In the 41 year history of IPSL, he is the first person who became a president from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Prof. Gamage is a Professor in Physics attached to the Department of Physics, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and has been serving as an academic staff member at the Department of Physics, USJ since 1997. He obtained his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Geophysics at Tohoku University, Japan under the Japanese Government Scholarship Program. He earned his B.Sc.(Special) Degree in Physics from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Prof. Gamage is a researcher in Geophysics and his current research interests are on Solid-Earth Geophysics, Seismology and Wave propagation. He is a Fellow of IPSL and member of Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS), American Geophysical Union (AGU) and Seismological Society of Japan (SSJ).
