The University of Sri Jayewardenepura welcome 2016/17 batch of the Faculty of Medical Sciences

“Ethics play an important role in many careers, it is more so when you are a doctor. As future doctors you must not forget your roots and the necessity to be ethical, because this is what will make you successful. At the end of your five years with us we expect you to go to the world as professional Doctors who are kind to the patients and passionate and honest in service” said Professor Sampath Amaratunge addressing an audience of future Doctors at the orientation programme of the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The Faculty has worked enthusiastically to welcome its 27 th batch of students for their MBBS programme. They have made every effort to grant them their place at the university even before the graduating of the outgoing batch which was stalled due to several issues in the country.

The orientation programme for the 2016/17 entrants of the Faculty of Medical Sciences was held on the 4th of December at 11.30 am at the Anatomy Auditorium welcoming the 27 th batch for the MBBS programme. Professor Sampath Amaratunge, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Professor Surangi G. Yasawardene, Dean and Professor of Anatomy were present at the occasion.

Speaking at the orientation, Professor Sampath Amaratunge and Professor Surangi G. Yasawardene commended and congratulated the students for their exceptional performance at the G.C. E Advanced level examination.

Professor Surangi G. Yasawardene stated that, “gaining entrance into a university is not an easy task; entrance to the Medical faculty is far more difficult and challenging. Admission to the faculty of medicine in the University of Sri Jayewardenepura is granted only to those who had greater ‘Z score’ than 2.

Thereby the University takes great pride in welcoming the cream of the crop to teach, to educate and nurture; so as to produce high quality doctors who treats their patients with compassion and kindness.

“The Faculty of Medical Sciences, established in 1993 is rapidly evolving and expanding. The faculty has opened its latest building, constructed under an investment of Rs.1.6 Billion. The faculty offers students a wholesome experience due to the presence of several paramedical departments. This experience that the students gain nurtures them and gives them a better understanding of the field they have chosen,” Professor Surangi G. Yasawardene said.

Furthermore, the faculty provides an excellent training in patient care prior to releasing the students into hospitals to pursue this noble career. Medicine is a universal requirement; thereby the University has taken utmost care to facilitate the students with the best lecturers, equipment and other facilities.
