The Department of Sinhala and Mass Communication, in collaboration with Japura Media, successfully launched the short film “Down the Memory Lane – to Japura” on Wednesday, 11th December 2024, at the Sumangala Auditorium of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The event served as a platform to celebrate the university’s rich history and the collective memories of its community.
The short film, a product of the creativity and dedication of the department’s 4th-year undergraduates, depicted key milestones and cherished moments of the university’s legacy. The short film dives into hostel camaraderie, scenic beauty, student politics, and the energy of youth. The story follows a foreign-educated alumnus, now a professor, as he returns to reconnect with old friends who are now part of the university. The screening attracted an audience of students, staff, and alumni, fostering a shared sense of nostalgia and pride.
The event was graced by several distinguished guests, including Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Prof. Hiran Amarasekara, Director of Digital Media and Communication. Mr. Ranjith Iddamalgoda, an advisory board member of the Alumni Association of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Mr. Bennett Rathnayake, a renowned film director, were also present to support and encourage the students’ initiative.
The screening was followed by an interactive session where the creators of the short film shared their experiences and challenges during the project. This session provided an engaging opportunity for attendees to delve deeper into the creative process behind the production.
The event concluded on a high note, with attendees expressing their appreciation for the effort and creativity demonstrated by the undergraduates. “Down the Memory Lane – to Japura” stands as a testament to the talents of the students and their commitment to honoring the legacy of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
