Japura Warna 2023 – 47th Colours Awarding Ceremony of USJ

The 47th Colours Awarding Ceremony of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was successfully held on the 27th of March 2024 at the Hotel Grand Mondo – Luxury Banquets in Homagama.

The event was graced by the distinguished Special Guest, Senior Prof. Sampath Amarathunga, Chairmen of UGC, Chief Guest, Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor of the University,the Guest of Honour, Mr. Sujeewa Rajapaksha, Chairman, People’s Bank/Main Sponsor of the Colours Night, and the Honorable Sports Advisory Board Co-Chairman, Senior Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera and Prof. K.L. Wasantha Perera.

This event held great significance for the university’s sports stars, who achieved remarkable 3-Peat success at the 14th Sri Lanka University Games 2023, securing the Overall Women’s Championship, Overall Men’s Championship, and Overall Championship. A total of 500+ athletes from 36 teams across 24 sport activities were recognized and awarded. Among the recipients, 37 students were honored as “Best Players” and 11 students received “Special Awards” for their outstanding achievements.

The prestigious title of “Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year” was awarded to Srimali Samarakoon, a 4th-year student from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, in recognition of her exceptional performance in Weightlifting. She demonstrated remarkable prowess by placing first in the 2023 National Sports Festival and also awarded as the Overall Best lifter in the event and placed first in the 2023 National Weightlifting Championship as well. She also placed second in the 2023 Youth, Junior and Senior Commonwealth Championship under 45kg weight category. And she also managed to set 2 national records.

Virunaka Hendahewa, a student from the Faculty of Engineering, was honored as the “Most Outstanding Sportsman of the Year” for his remarkable achievements. He proudly represented Sri Lanka at the 26th Asian Table Tennis Championships 2023, which was held in Korea, demonstrating his exceptional sportsmanship and immense potential. He is also rank number 06th in the All-Island Open Men’s Category in September 2023, and achieving some remarkable achievements in various other tournaments.
