USJ Welcomes 1,100 New Undergraduates to FHSS for the 2022/2023 Academic Year (2022 A/L intake)

 

The inauguration ceremony of the Orientation program for the new intake of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (2023) was held on the 22nd of January 2024 at 2.00 p.m. at the Bandaranayake Hall with the participation of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura; Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage, Registrar of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura; Mr.A.B. Weliwita, Librarian,  Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda,  Deans of other faculties, Heads of Departments as well as the academic members of the faculty. The ceremony was welcomed by Professor Sepala Samarasekara, the Chairman of the Orientation Committee who introduced the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to the new students. Followed by, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura; Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage and Registrar of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Mr.A.B. Weliwita addressed the students on the university culture respectively.

The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, addressed the students regarding the noteworthy achievements of the faculty resulting from the delayed release of the A-level examination results held in January, attributed to teacher strikes and various other factors. Had the results not been delayed, these students would have had the opportunity to commence their studies much earlier. However, the results of the A/L examination were eventually released in September, and the announcement of the cut-off marks was further delayed until December. Nevertheless, the faculty managed to promptly commence the academic year 2022/23, no later than one month after the release of the cut-off marks. Professor Heenkenda proudly announced that the faculty was the first among all other arts faculties within the entire university system to initiate academic activities for the academic year 2022/23.

The student enrollment figures for the faculty are as follows: 852 students under the general intake category, 47 students for Information Technology, 46 students for Financial Economics, 41 students for Teaching English as a Second Language, 41 students for Creative Music Technology, and 45 students for Social Work as direct intake. The faculty has introduced a total of 36-degree courses under 16 departments.
