Sri Lankan scientists target brain disease market
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan scientists are seeking partnerships with foreign firms and research outfits to develop medicines using native herbs and plants to tackle neurological disorders, estimated to be a trillion dollar market.
The potential to use natural products to treat or delay the onset of neurological degenerative disorders was big and growing, said Ranil de Silva, a professor at Sri Jayewardenepura University.
“There’s no known cure for neurological degenerative diseases,” said de Silva, of the university’s Department of Anatomy in the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
“At 65 years the likelihood of developing stroke or dementia or both is over one in three. The odds are we all indirectly experience the devastating consequences of these diseases. It’s a global issue but also a personal one.”
The gravity of the issue was shown by the cost of treatment of neurodegenerative disorders estimated at a trillion US dollars globally, de Silva told a symposium on natural products that brought together academics, inventors, policymakers and business people.
“We are looking for international collaboration for enhancing the global marketability of our own unique natural products to safeguard and protect brain health,” de Silva said.
Sri Lankan scientists aim to form private-public partnerships with international collaboration for research and development of natural products like tea and native herbs and plants, he said.
“Our aim is to develop cost effective natural products, cost effective therapeutic approaches using our own natural products and ayurvedic medicine.”
This would pave the way to develop patented natural products, de Silva said. (Colombo/December 31, 2015)

පාරම්පරික වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රම ක්‍රමයෙන් අභාවයට යාමත් සමඟ බටහිර වෛද්‍ය විද්‍යාව වෙත සහ ආයුර්වේදීය වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රම වලට යොමු වනු දක්නට ලැබේ. නමුත්, රජයක් ලෙස පාරම්පරික වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රමවේදයන් යළි ජනප්‍රිය කිරීමට පියවර ගත යුතු බව විශ්වාස කරන්නේ යැයි ද හෙළ වෙදකම යළි නගා සිටුවමින් එය රටින් පිටත ජනප්‍රිය කිරීමට පියවර ගත යුතු බව ද ඒ හරහා ද මෙරට අපනයන ආදායම ඉහළ නැංවීමේ හැකියාවක් පවතින බව ද දයා ගමගේ මෙහිදී කියා සිටියේය.
මෙම හමුවට සහභාගී වී සිටි පාරම්පරික වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රම පිළිබඳ පර්යේෂණ සිදු කළ සියලූ දෙනා වෙළඳපොළ ඉලක්ක කර ගනිමින් තම පර්යේෂණ මෙහෙයවා තිබිණි. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ද පර්යේෂණ හා සංවර්ධන කටයුතු මෙහෙයවීමේ දී පර්යේෂණ හා සංවර්ධන කටයුතු වෙනම මාවතකත් වෙළඳපොළ අවශ්‍යතා සහ ඉලක්කයන් වෙනම මාවතකත් ගමන් ක්‍රමය වෙනුවට, පර්යේෂණ-සංවර්ධන හා වෙළඳපොළ අවශ්‍යතා-ඉලක්ක එකිනෙක සම්බන්ධ වෙමින් කටයුතු කරන ක්‍රම වේදයක් ජනප්‍රිය කළ යුතු වේ.
මේ සඳහා පාරම්පරික වෙදකම සම්බන්ධයෙන් පර්යේෂණ හා සංවර්ධන කටයුතු සිදු කිරීම වෙනුවෙන් ප්‍රාථමික කර්මාන්ත අමාත්‍යාංශය, ශ්‍රී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය සහ පාරම්පරික වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රම පිළිබඳ පර්යේෂකයින් එක්ව අවබෝධතා ගිවිසුමකට ද එළඹීමට අපේක්ෂා කෙරේ.
