The Asian Development Bank and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura signed a contract on the 13th of February 2019 to establish a State of the Art Engineering Faculty at Kottawa. This endeavor is a brainchild of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sr. Prof Sampath Amaratunge.
The faculty which is fully funded by the Asian Development Bank will commence in two phases with an initial investment of Rs. 6.7 billion and the second phase with another Rs. 1.2 bn. Furthermore, an allocation of Rs. 1 billion for the land in Kottawa was made through 2019 National budget. The total project cost will be Rs. 8.9bn.
“This Facility that is to be established for the Engineering Faculty which is already functioning with three batches will be the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. It will provide students space and the equipment necessary to engage invention and innovation thereby contributing to the capital of the university and the nation” the Vice-Chancellor said after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The Engineering Faculty of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was established in the latter part of the year 2016. The faculty with its five departments has already made significant progress in providing students with the necessary environment to develop their skills and knowledge.
