The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is guided by the vision of “Prospering lives through education” and the mission of “Developing globally competent citizens for a sustainable future, drawing wisdom from our cultural heritage.” It is tirelessly dedicated to enhancing the tertiary education sector in Sri Lanka.
The university traces its origins back to the Vidyodaya Pirivena, established in 1873 to expand Buddhist education and oriental studies during peak colonial rule. It later attained university status in 1959 under the Vidyodaya University of Ceylon. The institution was officially renamed the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 1978.
Presently, the university encompasses eleven faculties:

- Faculty of Applied Sciences
- Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce
- Faculty of Medical Sciences
- Faculty of Graduate Studies
- Faculty of Technology
- Faculty of Engineering
- Faculty of Allied Health Sciences
- Faculty of Dental Sciences
- Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources
- Faculty of Computing
A recent addition to the university is the Faculty of Computing, established in June 2022. Its inaugural class commenced studies in early 2023.
The 50th Convocation is a momentous occasion for the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, its graduates, and their families. It is a celebration of hard work, dedication, and academic excellence.
