ප්‍රාග් ඓතිහාසික පාහියන් මානවයාගේ අස්ථි කොටස් ජර්මනියේ සිට ජ’පුර වෛද්‍ය පීඨයට – 12000-year-old Skeletal remains excavated from Fa Hien Cave were handed over to the Faculty of Medical Sciences for conservation

The human skeletal remains that were excavated from Fa Hien Cave in 2012 and taken to Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, Germany for further studies, were brought back to Sri Lanka by Dr. Oshan Wedage, Senior Lecturer, Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura after archaeological research examination.

The skeletal remains were received by Hon. Vidura Wickramanayaka, M.P., State Minister of National Heritage, Performing Arts and Rural Arts Promotion and were handed over to Senior Professor Surangi Yasawardene, Chair Professor of Anatomy, and Dr. Sajith Edirisinghe, Senior Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura on 11th February 2022  at Ministry of National Heritage, Performing Arts and Rural Arts Promotion for further conservation, exhibition and research.

This excavation took place in 2012. The skeleton was dated for 12000 years before present, and it was identified to be of a young female skeleton aged between 20-30 years. A combined research examination was carried out by University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, Germany, Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka and Department of History and Archaeology, FHSS, USJ.

Nishanthi Jayasinghe, Secretary, State Ministry of National Heritage, Performing Arts and Rural Arts Promotion, Prof. Anura Manatunga, Director General of Archaeology and Senior Professor, Department of Archaeology,  Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Prof. Alexandar Kapukotuwa, Professor and Head, Department of History and Archaeology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Ms. Reshani Dharmawardene Archaeological Research Assistant at Department of Archaeology participated at the event.
