Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) is the oldest faculty of study at the university: It was formed in 1958 concurrent with the establishment of the university, which was then called “Vidyodaya.” Initially, the main goal of FHSS was to promote national languages and culture. However, since then, the faculty has evolved as a modern center of higher education in social sciences and humanities with more focus on research in these areas. The faculty provides a high quality education in a large number of study fields and offers Bachelor of Arts (General) and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree programs.
The Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura is the largest science faculty in Sri Lanka in terms of the number of students and staff.
The Faculty of Applied Sciences under its nine academic departments conduct 21 B.Sc. degree level courses and 5 B.Sc. undergraduate degrees in English medium. Interestingly, in addition to the conventional pure science subjects such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, zoology, botany etc., the Faculty of Applied Sciences at University of Sri Jayewardenepura offers a series of applied science subjects such as polymer science and technology, applied physics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, information communication technology and forestry and environmental science. Moreover, the Faculty of Applied Sciences offers undergraduate level management subjects, economics and management science.
