Professor Sampath Amaratunge the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was presented with an honorary degree(Sammanopadhiya) by the unanimous agreement of the Vidyadara Sabhava of the Maligakanda Vidyodaya Pirivena at the 107th Commemoration ceremony of Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero. The occasion was held on the 4th of May 2018 at the Maligakanda Vidyodaya Pirivena premises. This is the first-time the Vice Chancellor has been given such a privilege by the Maligakanda Vidyodaya Pirivena. The degree symbolizes the service done towards the development of the world and the ‘Buddha Shasana’, it is also a token that denotes the commitment of the holder towards the development these aspects.

Prof. Sampath Amaratunge also awarded a Doctorate Degree (Doctor of Philosophy) by Dharma Buddhist University of Malaysia on the 3rd of December 2017. This Honorary Doctorate was awarded as an appreciation of his lifelong contribution towards the development, promotion of the higher education and for the enhancement of facilities for Dharma learning.
