The University of Sri Jayewardenepura started the year 2018 with grace. The university community gathered near the Shrine roomand the Bo tree on the 2nd of January 2018 at 8.30 am, to eremoniously begin the year with a religious ceremony. The Vice Chancellor, the Deans of the seven faculties, Registrar and other representatives continued to implement the traditions of the event such as boiling milk. The tradition suggests that the year will be filled with success and happiness similar to the overflowing pot of milk. The traditions were conducted while Pirith was being chanted blessing the activities of the university.
Professor Sampath Amaratunge the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura delivering the speech mentioned the great contribution the University has made to our mother nation throughout history. The Vidyodaya Pirirvena, and later Vidyodaya University has always inculcated the true essence behind the term ‘University’ within itself.
He further said that the University has grown strong over the years. He said similar to the previous years, in 2018 too the University plans to achieve great accomplishments that will in-turn serve the nation.
“Having a vision is important; however, what is more important is having the drive and the capabilities to execute that vision. So in this year that dawned we have a vision to achieve great things. I have no doubt that we can achieve great feats with the cooperation of the staff, academics and administration of this university,” He said.
The university with the aid of the Faculty of Applied Sciences has been able to initiate Web of Science. Similarly there are many other projects that are underway, many infrastructural development projects in the pipeline and many developments to the research culture of the university that will be brought to being in the year 2018.
This annual event marks the solidarity and fellowship among the staff and administration of the University. Towards the conclusion of the event, the New Year oath published by the Ministry of Policy Administration was taken by the university community. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura welcomes the year 2018, with great hope and ambition. It begins the year with the determination to execute its great vision, a vision that serves the nation.
