Observership programmes for international medical students
University of Sri Jayewardenepura owns a ‘Faculty of Medical Sciences’ producing graduates in medicine, human biological science, nursing, medical laboratory science and pharmacy. The international elective programme at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura comprises of four (05) different programmes, namely elective attachments, observer positions, selective programmes, the tropical medicine and infectious diseases programme and learning anatomy with cadaver dissections. In addition, there is a student and staff exchange programme which is open only for students and staff from Uppsala University, Sweden for nursing courses.
Observership programmes for international medical students
Students in pre-medicine courses and those who do not have clinical exposure in their medical school are offered observer positions.
Selective programme for international students
Opportunity to conduct a research project, currently open only for students from University of Gothenburg, Sweden and James Cook University, Australia with whom FMS, USJP has signed memorandum of understanding agreements (MOUs). This will be extended in future when requests for collaborations are received from other medical schools.
Tropical Medicine and Infectious disease programme for international students
The tropical medicine and Infectious Diseases programme runs twice a year. It allows students to learn tropical medicine in a truly exotic setting, which offers the opportunity to observe emerging and re-emerging diseases in South Asia.
Learning Anatomy with cadaver dissections
The discipline of anatomy provides a fundamental knowledge of the structure of the human body. It also reinforces the study of physiology,
pathology and clinical specialties such as clinical medicine, surgery and radiology. Thus, a thorough knowledge of anatomy is vital to gain skills required for the profession. Cadaveric dissection allows the student to grasp a clear visuo-spatial picture of the organization of human body, experience the texture of human tissues, witness and comprehend pathological conditions while learning the normal in a realistic nature.
