For the first time in Sri Lankan sports history an athlete has qualified for the Olympics in Javelin Throw. Sumedha Ranasinghe, an undergraduate in Sports Management at the Sri Jayewardenepura University, performed an amazing throw of 83.04 m to qualify for the glorious games. His throw equally shattered the previous national record, and surpasses attempt by the Asian Championship Gold Medalist which was only 79.74 m.
24 year old Ranasinghe hails from a sports loving family in Kegalle and has studied at Kegalle MV. He is presently coached by renowned javelin throw coach Pradeep Nishantha, who praises Sumedha’s remarkable efficiency in managing studies and practices. Sumedha now becomes the country’s third track and field athlete to qualify for the Olympics.
